Ruby is close to our heart at Pusher, after all it’s the platform that powers a lot of what we do! Because of this we were extra proud to support Frozen Rails in Helsinki — it’s nice to be able to give something back.
The event was fantastic and it was great to spend the 2 days showing people Pusher and talking about their realtime needs. We were captivated and inspired by the use-cases people had for Pusher and the ways they plan to use us. We can’t wait to see them come to a reality!
The talks were fascinating and with speakers from Travis CI, AirBnb and Heroku (amongst others) the quality was top-notch. My not-very-secret favourite was Patrick McKenzie’s, “How to make a million dollars with Ruby on Rails.” If you’re interested in business and building a solid product then you should definitely check out his blog posts on the matter.
Don’t just take my word for it, other Pusherinos were there too. Hamilton Chapman’s favourite talk was André Arko’s about Rubygems, titled “Extreme Makeover: Rubygems Edition.”
It was awesome (and slightly concerning at times!) to hear about how Rubygems is run and setup and how it’s changed over the last couple of years. It’s easy to take things like Rubygems and Bundler for granted because they’re so easy to use and have become such a big part of Ruby development so it’s good to get a look behind the scenes every now and then.
Olga Dukova’s favourite was Amy Wibowo’s talk on hacking a digital knitting machine at AirBnb.
The talk that stood out for me was Amy Wibowo’s story about a bunch of AirBnb engineers hacking a knitting machine from the 1980s. It was quirky, unusual and very inspiring.
A special shoutout goes to our customer Codeship who came by our booth and dropped off some t-shirts for the team. Thanks guys! Check out their blog post on how they used Pusher to improve their continuous integration service.
Overall, we had a great time at Frozen Rails and can’t wait to do more with the Ruby community.
